1 Wait until caladium plant foliage is killed by frost. Once most of the leaves of the caladiums are brown and dead, they are ready to be winterized.
2 Dig up the large caladium tubers from the ground using a small hand shovel. Leave the plant's root ball and surrounding soil as undisturbed as possible, lifting only the tuber from the ground.
3 Rinse the tubers thoroughly, removing all traces of soil, and allow them to air dry for one week at room temperature (70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit).
4 Fill standard paper lunch bags with a peat moss or vermiculite. Place one tuber inside each bag.
5 Store the tubers in a dark place, at temperatures of 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Dust each tuber lightly with fungicide and place small slits in each bag if the storage facility is damp or humid.
6 Open bags and check the tubers once a month. Put a few drops of water on any shriveled tubers, and throw away any tubers that have grown soft.
7 Plant tubers in the spring when the soil has reached at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
