Nous recevons régulièrement la question concernant les palmiers qui ne dépassent pas 2 à 3 mètres de hauteur et la possibilité de limiter leur croissance. Après tout, tout le monde n’a pas assez de place pour un énorme palmier et on veut bien sûr éviter les mauvaises surprises. Dans cet article, nous vous donnerons un éclairage sur les types de palmiers qui répondent à vos souhaits, les éléments auxquels vous devez prêter attention et quelles sont les attentes réalistes.

Garder une petite taille par l’élagage n’est pas possible

Contrairement à de nombreux arbres et arbustes dans le jardin, la croissance d’un palmier ne peut pas être contrôlée par un élagage. Les feuilles ne se forment qu’à un seul endroit, au cœur du palmier et si vous le taillez, vous vous retrouvez avec un stipe mort sans feuilles. Certains prétendent que l’on peut limiter la croissance en laissant le palmier dans un pot. Ceci encore n’est que partiellement vrai. La croissance du palmier sera en effet un peu plus lente, mais elle se poursuivra. Surtout, il sera moins beau et nécessitera plus d’attention en termes de nutriments et d’eau. Cela s’applique également aux palmiers qui sont placés dans des pots en pleine terre. Ceci ne limitera pas la croissance, mais causera des problèmes plus tard en raison d’un soutien réduit parce que les racines latérales ont été formées en nombre insuffisant.

Choisissez la bonne espèce

Il existe plus de 4000 espèces de palmiers, mais seule une poignée d’entre eux est vraiment adaptée à la culture dans un jardin au climat tempéré. C’est ce sur quoi nous nous concentrons dans cet article. Par souci de commodité, nous nous limitons également aux espèces faciles à obtenir. Lors du choix d’un palmier approprié, il est conseillé d’examiner soigneusement à l’avance les propriétés du palmier et les besoins exacts de ce type de palmier. La hauteur souhaitée du palmier peut être une exigence de ce genre, mais pensez aussi à la rusticité du palmier, les besoins concernant l’arrosage,….

Chamaerops humilis

Le palmier nain est une petite espèce qui pousse davantage en forme d’arbuste du à ses rejets. Il est résistant à -12°C et préfère les endroits plus secs et ensoleillés. S’il y a trop d’humidité, il rencontre des difficultés particulièrement en hiver, ce qui est d’abord visible par des taches noires sur les feuilles. Il ne nécessite pas de soins particuliers et sa croissance est plutôt lente. Les tiges des feuilles ont des épines aiguës, gardez cela à l’esprit pour les endroits où l’on passe fréquemment. Idéal pour les petits jardins et également très approprié pour la culture en pot sur la terrasse ou le balcon.

Trachycarpus fortunei

Le palmier chanvre est en fait le palmier de choix pour presque tous les jardins. Bien que la hauteur finale soit d’environ 12 mètres, il faudra de nombreuses années avant que le palmier soit réellement aussi grand. Ne vous laissez donc pas décourager par cela. Nous estimons que le Trachycarpus, tout en haut de cet article, a au moins 30 ans. Les images ci-dessous illustrent le mieux la croissance effective. Il est frappant de constater que les palmiers plantés plus petits poussent beaucoup plus vite que les sujets plantés déjà grands. C’est un palmier extrêmement facile qui pousse bien dans presque tous les endroits. Il est résistant jusqu’à -18°C et ne nécessite donc pas vraiment de soins. Il se sentira le mieux en pleine terre mais pourra également être cultivé en pot. En raison de son aspect plus étroit, il convient même aux petits jardins.

Alternatives

Les alternatives possibles aux palmiers qui ne grandissent pas trop vite et ne nécessitent pas de soins trop particuliers sont

Jubaea chilensis

Ce palmier pousse très lentement et est donc beaucoup plus cher. Il est résistant à une température d’environ -12 °C, mais doit être maintenu au sec pendant les hivers plus extrêmes. Bien qu’il puisse devenir très costaud avec le temps, sa croissance lente en fait un beau palmier, également pour le jardin de taille moyenne.

Butia odorata

Un magnifique palmier qui résiste à environ -12°C et qui n’a donc besoin de protection que pendant les hivers les plus froids. Il pousse de façon relativement compacte, ce qui le rend facile à placer même dans les petits jardins. Cependant, ce palmier est moins courant et est encore souvent proposé sous le nom de Butia capitata.

Moins approprié…

Phoenix canarienis

Le Dattier des Canaries est souvent proposé à la vente sous forme de petit spécimen dans les supermarchés, les magasins de bricolage et les jardineries. Cependant, il s’agit généralement d’un palmier dont la taille devient rapidement ingérable. Il pousse relativement vite, surtout une fois qu’il est vraiment lancé, mais n’est résistant qu’à -6°C, donc à l’exception d’hivers très cléments, il a toujours besoin de protection. Un beau palmier, mais qui ne convient qu’aux grands jardins et aux climats doux ou aux amateurs qui n’ont aucun problème à appliquer la protection, ce qui est un travail énorme une fois que ce palmier est devenu plus grand. Il se comporte également bien en pot, mais il y poussera toujours assez vite et le pot devient donc vite trop petit au bout d’un certain temps. Par contre, il peut résister à la taille des racines et peut donc être conservé un peu plus longtemps dans le même pot.

Washingtonia robusta

Le palmier du Mexique est un autre palmier typique qui apparaît souvent dans les dépliants publicitaires sous forme de petit spécimen. Cependant, il grandit très vite et ne nécessite que peu de soins spécifiques. En raison de sa rusticité limitée, – 6°C et de sa taille généreuse après seulement quelques années, la plantation n’est recommandée qu’à ceux qui savent de quoi il s’agit. Tôt ou tard, il deviendra trop grand pour être protégé et un hiver un peu plus rigoureux peut alors être fatal.

We regularly receive the question which palm tree will not grow taller than 6 tot 10 feet (2 to 3 metres) and whether growth can be limited. After all, not everyone has enough space for a huge palm tree and you want to avoid unpleasant surprises of course. In this article we will give you more insight into which types of palm meet your wishes, what you should pay attention to and which expectations are realistic.

Keeping small by pruning not possible

Unlike many other trees and shrubs in the garden, the growth of a palm cannot be controlled by pruning. The leaves are formed in only one place, in the heart of the palm and if you prune this you end up with a dead trunk without foliage. Some claim that you can limit growth by leaving the palm in a pot. This too is only partly true. The palm will indeed grow a bit slower but the growth will continue. Above all, it will look less beautiful and will need more attention in terms of nutrients and watering. This also applies to palms that are placed in pots in the open ground. It will not restrict growth but will cause problems later on due to reduced support because insufficient lateral roots were formed.

Pick the right species

There are over 4000 palm species but only a handful is really suitable to keep in the garden with a temperate climate. This is what we focus on in this article. For the sake of convenience, we also limit ourselves to those species that are easy to obtain. When choosing a suitable palm, it is advisable to look carefully in advance at what the right properties of the palm are and what exactly the needs of this type of palm are. Chamaerops humilis

The European fan palm is a small perennial species that grows more in shrub form because of the offshoots. It is hardy to -12°C/10.4°F and likes the drier sunny location. If there is too much moisture, it is particularly troublesome in winter, which is initially manifested by black dots on the leaves. It requires no special care and growth is rather slow. The leaf stalks have sharp spines, keep this in mind in places that are frequently walked past. Ideal for smaller gardens and also very suitable for pots on the terrace or balcony.

Trachycarpus fortunei

The Chinese windmill palm is actually the palm of choice for almost any garden. Although the final height is about 12 meters it will take many years before the palm is actually that big. So don’t be put off by this. We estimate that the Trachycarpus at the very top of this article is at least 30 years old. The pictures below illustrate the effective growth best. It is striking that smaller planted palms grow much faster than palms plantend when they were already large. It’s an extremely easy palm that grows well in almost any place. It is hardy down to -18°C/-0.4°F and therefore doesn’t really need any real care. It grows best in open ground but can also be kept in pots if desired. Due to its narrower appearance it fits even in smaller gardens.

Alternatives

Possible alternatives to palms that do not grow too big too quickly and do not require too special care are

Jubaea chilensis

This palm grows very slowly and is therefore a lot more expensive. It is hardy to around -12°C/10.4°F but needs to be kept dry during more extreme winters. Although it can become very substantial over time, its slow growth makes it a beautiful palm, even for the medium sized garden.

Butia odorata

A beautiful palm that is hardy to around -12°C/10.4°F and therefore only needs protection during the colder winters. It grows relatively compact, which makes it easy to place even in the smaller garden. However, the palm is less common and is commonly sold under the name Butia capitata.

Phoenix canarienis

The Canary date palm is often offered for sale as a small specimen in supermarkets, DIY stores and garden centres. However, this is typically a palm that quickly becomes unmanageable in size. It grows relatively fast, especially once it’s really established in open ground but is only hardy to -6°C/21.2°F, so with the exception of very mild winters it always needs protection. A beautiful palm but only suitable for large gardens and mild climates or for enthusiasts who have no problems applying the protection which is a huge job once it’s bigger. It also does well in pots but will still continue to grow well, so the pot will become too small after a while. It can withstand root pruning so it can be kept in the same pot a little longer.

Washingtonia robusta

The Mexican fan palm is another typical palm that often appears in advertising leaflets as a small specimen. However, it grows very fast and needs little specific care. Due to its limited hardness, – 4°C/24.8°F and its generous size after a few years, planting is only recommended for enthusiasts who know what they are getting into. Sooner or later it will become too big to protect and then a slightly harsher winter can be fatal.

Regelmatig ontvangen we de vraag welke palmboom niet groter wordt dan 2 à 3 meter en of de groei ook beperkt kan worden. Niet iedereen heeft immers voldoende plaats voor een enorme palmboom en u wilt onaangename verrassingen vermijden natuurlijk. In dit artikel geven we u meer inzicht in welke palmsoorten aan uw wensen voldoen, waar u op moet letten en welke verwachten realistisch zijn.

Klein houden door snoei niet mogelijk

In tegenstelling tot veel andere bomen en heesters in de tuin, kan de groei van een palm niet beheerst worden door te snoeien. Het blad wordt maar op één plek gevormd, in het hart van de palm en wanneer u dit zou snoeien eindigt u met een dode stam zonder bladeren. Sommigen beweren dat je de groei kunt beperken door de palm in pot te laten. Ook dat is maar deels waar. De palm zal inderdaad wel iets trager groeien maar de groei blijft wel gewoon doorgaan. Hij zal er vooral minder mooi uit zien en meer aandacht nodig hebben qua voedingsstoffen en water. Dit geldt overigens ook voor palmen die met pot in de volle grond worden gezet. Het zal de groei niet beperken maar later wel problemen opleveren door een verminderde steun omdat er onvoldoende zijwaartse wortels werden gevormd.

Kies de juiste soort

Er bestaan ruim 4000 palmsoorten maar slechts een handje vol is ook echt geschikt om te houden in de tuin met een gematigd klimaat. Daarop focussen we ons dan ook in dit artikel. We beperken ons gemakshalve ook tot de soorten die gemakkelijk te verkrijgen zijn. Bij het kiezen van een geschikte palm is het aan te raden om vooraf goed op te zoeken wat de juiste eigenschappen van de palm zijn en welke behoeften deze palmsoort precies heeft. De gewenste hoogte van de palm kan zo’n wens zijn, maar denk bijvoorbeeld ook aan de winterhardheid van de palm, de behoeften kan water,…

De Europese dwergpalm is een klein blijvende soort die door de uitlopers meer in struikvorm groeit. Hij is winterhard tot -12°C en houdt van de wat drogere zonnige standplaats. Bij te veel vocht krijgt hij het vooral ‘s winters lastig wat zich in eerste instantie uit door zwarte stippen op het blad. Hij vereist geen speciale verzorging en de groei is eerder traag. De bladstelen hebben scherpe bladstekels, houd hier rekening mee op plekken waar veelvuldig langsgelopen wordt. Ideaal voor de kleinere tuinen en ook zeer geschikt voor in pot voor op het terras of balkon.

Trachycarpus fortunei

De Chinese waaierpalm is eigenlijk de palm bij uitstek geschikt voor vrijwel elke tuin. Hoewel de uiteindelijke hoogte zo’n 12 meter bedraagt zal het vele jaren duren voordat de palm ook effectief zo groot zal zijn. Laat u zich hierdoor dus niet afschrikken. We schatten dat de Trachycarpus helemaal bovenaan dit artikel minstens een jaar of 30 is. De onderstaande foto’s illustreren de effectieve groei het beste. Opvallend is dat kleiner aangeplante exemplaren veel sneller groeien dan exemplaren die al groot zijn aangeplant. Het is een uiterst makkelijk palm die op vrijwel iedere plek goed groeit. Hij is winterhard tot -18°C en heeft daarom eigenlijk geen echte verzorging nodig. Hoe doet het het beste in volle grond maar kan eventueel ook in pot gehouden worden. Door zijn smallere uiterlijk past hij zelfs in de kleinere tuinen prima.

Alternatieven

Mogelijke alternatieven van palmen die niet zo snel te groot worden en een niet al te speciale verzorging vragen zijn de

Jubaea chilensis

Deze palm groeit erg traag en is daardoor ook een stuk duurder. Hij is winterhard tot zo’n -12°C maar moet bij extremere winters wel droog gehouden worden. Hoewel hij op termijn erg massief kan worden maakt zijn trage groei dat het toch een mooie palm is, ook voor de middelgrote tuin.

Butia odorata

Een prachtige palm die winterhard is tot ongeveer -12°C en dus enkel bij de wat koudere winters wel bescherming nodig heeft. Hij groeit relatief compact waardoor hij zelfs in de kleinere tuin nog goed te plaatsen is. De palm is echter minder courant en wordt nog vaak aangeboden onder de naam Butia capitata.

Minder geschikt…

Phoenix canarienis

(volledige beschrijving)
De Canarische dadelpalm wordt veel als klein exemplaar te koop aangeboden in de supermarkten, bouwmarkten en tuincentra. Dit is echter typisch zo’n palm die snel onhandelbaar groot wordt. Hij groeit relatief snel, zeker eens hij echt aangeslagen is in volle grond maar is slechts winterhard tot -6°C waardoor hij met uitzondering van hele milde winters wel steeds bescherming nodig heeft. Een prachtige palm maar enkel geschikt voor grote tuinen en een mild klimaat of voor liefhebbers die geen problemen hebben het aanbrengen van de bescherming wat vooral een enorme klus is eens hij groter is. Hij doet het ook goed in pot maar zal ook dan nog steeds vlot doorgroeien waardoor de pot na verloopt van tijd te klein wordt. Hij kan overigens wel tegen wortelsnoei zodat hij iets langer in dezelfde pot gehouden kan worden.

Washingtonia robusta

De Mexicaanse waaierpalm is nog zo’n typische palm die vaak in de reclamefoldertjes staat als klein exemplaar. Hij groeit echter enorm snel en heeft weinig specifieke verzorging nodig. Door zijn beperkte winterhardheid, – 6°C en zijn royale omvang na enkele jaren is de aanplant enkel aan te raden voor liefhebbers die die weten waar ze aan beginnen. Vroeg of laat wordt hij te groot om te beschermen en dan kan een iets strengere winter fataal zijn.

Deze zomer waren we na 20 jaar weer eens in de prachtige Cevennen, in Zuid Frankrijk, ter hoogte van Alès. Uiteraard is een bezoek aan het grootste bamboebos van Europa dan een must. In dit artikel geven we een korte indruk van het bezoek.

Het park bevindt zich in Anduze, een leuk toeristisch stadje, ten westen van Alès en op zo’n uurtje rijden van Montpellier. Het bekende stoomtreintje stopt voor het park maar ook met de auto is het heel goed bereikbaar en er zijn voldoende parkeerplekken.

Het bezoek duurt gemiddeld zo’n 2 à 3 uur zeker wanneer je als liefhebber ook echt de tijd neemt. Voor de kinderen is er bovendien ook genoeg te doen waardoor het bezoek voor het hele gezin de moeite waard is. Ook honden zijn welkom.

De borden zijn allemaal meertalig opgesteld (Frans, Engels) en ook de rondleiding was zeer interessant, zelfs als je al het één en ander van bamboe kent. Er zijn zo unieke doorsneden te vinden van het wortelgestel (woekerend vs niet-woekerend) en van een halm. Het is heerlijk wandelen in het park met behoorlijk wat variatie; het Laotiaanse dorp, een ruime Japanse tuin, een bamboe doolhof, serres en vijvers.

Bij de uitgang is er zelfs de mogelijkheid om planten aan te kopen en andere gerelateerde artikelen. Voor de ingang is een eetgelegenheid voorzien maar Anduze vormt daarvoor ook een prima uitvalsbasis. Voor een verfrissende duik achteraf zijn er genoeg plaatsjes langs de revier wanneer u richting Mialet danwel richting Saint-Jean-du-Gard rijdt.

If you only have a balcony at your disposal, there is certainly no reason not to keep exotic plants. There are plenty of possibilities. And even if there are certain restrictions, a balcony often has some advantages as well. On this picture you see our first “own garden”! In this article we already give some useful tips.

Atmosphere!

Because the balcony is usually clearly visible from the house, it is important that the balcony radiates an inviting atmosphere. This can easily be achieved by paying attention to a few details.

For instance, always use the same pots or containers so that it looks more consistent.

Also decorate the balcony with a table and chairs, a garden bench or sitting area. With a lantern, candles or possibly a suitable statue you can finalize it.

With a reed mat or bamboo fence a boring wall or balcony fence can also be covered or a waste container can be neatly hidden. That is not only more enjoyable, it also provides more privacy.

Make sure you have evergreen plants so that it is still worthwhile during the winter.

Keep in mind the growth of the plants. Some species quickly become too big. In terms of palms, Trachycarpus is therefore not recommended. Rather opt for a Chamaerops that remains much smaller but can still get a considerable size.

With a small pond you can easily add some life. There exist ready-to-use water falls, but you can also create a mini-pond yourself with a wine barrel.

By using hanging baskets or hanging pots on the wall you create depth. There are special cloths for the wall to create a vertical garden.

Herbs and certain vegetables are perfectly suited for growing in smaller containers. This way the garden is also useful for the kitchen!
